Catalan designer Eugeni Quitllet has been chosen as the Designer of the Year for interiors and design trade fair Maison & Objet Paris for January 2016. Known for his airy and weightless designs for companies and brands such as Kartell, Lexon and Aëdle, Quitllet’s design will be presented in a solo exhibition at the fair.

Quitllet describes himself as disoñador, which is a contraction of the Spanish words for designer and dreamer. His designs balance between drawings and sculptures, function and style, and fullness and voids, which reveal usually hidden silhouettes of materials and forms in the objects. The designer’s weightless-appearing objects and furniture include Cloud-io and Dream-Air chairs for Kartell and Dream Tools collection for Lexon. In 2011, Eugeni Quitllet designed the now-classic VK-1 headphones for French brand Aëdle. He has also collaborated with companies and brands such as Christofle, Air France, Vondom and Designer Box. Quitllet was born in 1972 on the island of Ibiza, Spain, and he graduated from La Llotja Art School in Barcelona, where he also lives and works.

Maison & Objet chooses a Designer of the Year for each of the biannual editions of the fairs – Maison & Objet Paris, Maison & Objet Asia and Maison & Objet Americas. For the January edition of Maison & Objet Paris, the Designer of the Year will be chosen for accomplishments in product design, whereas the focus of the Designer of the Year in September will lie on interior design. •
