Glass has long symbolized contrasting properties such as transparency, solidity, and fragility, which makes it both a compelling raw material for designers and a fitting metaphor for the “spirit of those battling cancer”. On the occasion of breast cancer awareness month, Luminaire presents its fourth “Love” auction to benefit oncological research, made possible by generous donations from renowned designers and manufacturers worldwide, alongside support from auction house Phillips.

The highlight of “GlasLove: Redesigning the Course of Cancer” is a collection of over 30 one-of-a-kind pieces by Nendo, produced and donated by auction partner Glas Italia. Originally presented at the Museo della Permanente in Milan in April 2015, Oki Sato’s “Nendo Works” are complemented by the “Prism” partition by Tokujin Yoshioka and prototypes of Naoto Fukasawa’s “Bent Glass bench”. Other notable items include works by the Campana Brothers, Tadao Ando, Piero Lissoni, Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola, Nao Tamura, and many more.

Luminaire founders Nasir and Nargis Kassamali have long been committed to this profoundly worthwhile cause, starting in 2006 with the PuppyLove auction, followed by 2008’s PaperLove and DesignLove in 2011. As in these past events, which have collectively raised nearly one million dollars in total, 100% of the proceeds from GlasLove will go to the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“GlasLove: Redesigning the Course of Cancer” launched on 19 September with an online auction on Phillips.com and a presentation of the auction items at the Luminaire Lab in the Miami Design District (at 3901 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33137). A live auction and gala dinner will be held on 6 October at the Moore Building, across the street from the Luminaire Lab. For more information, see the GlasLove page on Phillips.com or Luminaire.com.
