Robert Stadler: Questioning Design Conventions
Designer Robert Stadler’s objects are currently on show in several exhibitions. Thing#1 and Thing#2 at gallery Triple V in Paris question the real and the fake.
With today’s production technologies and facilities, form doesn’t need to follow anything but creator’s mind. In group exhibition You Name It at gallery Triple V in Paris, France, the real and the fake of designer Robert Stadler’s objects blend into each other alongside with blending of the natural and the artificial.
Stadler’s objects, entitled Thing#1 and Thing#2, are made of moulded resin-coated fibreglass fabric. Their skins are applied through hydrographic printing, in which decorative films can be mapped onto 3-dimensional objects. Picked from the image bank of the hydro-transfer film producer, the prints on Sadler’s objects intentionally include generic designs such fake materials, flames, skulls or biker aesthetic motifs, camouflage patterns and abstract graphics. Both Thing#1 and Thing#2 can slide along the designer’s Shelf#1, a shelf made of sand-blasted oak.
The objects presented at gallery Triple V show a fragment of Robert Stadler’s designs and products, which intervene in very diverse fields. The Austrian-born designer questions the status of an object as work of art and as a product, and works on free proposals as well as industrial and public commissions. Stadler studied design at Istituto Europeo di Design IED in Milan, Italy and École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle ENSCI in Paris, France. His work has been acquired by several private and public collections such as Fondation Cartier, Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, MAK – Museum for Contemporary Art in Vienna, Austria, and Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His clients include Dior, Nissan, Orange, Ricard and Thonet. •
Robert Stadler at group show You Name It at Galerie Triple V, Paris, France, from 4–27 February 2016. The show marks the first exhibition in the gallery’s new location.
