Design Miami/ Basel 2016 a Success
Now in its 11th edition this year, Design Miami/ Basel continues to raise the bar with record sales and attendance figures, affirming the fair’s status as the premier annual event for collectible design.
As the premier annual event for collectible design, Design Miami/ Basel continues to raise the bar with record sales and attendance figures, with a 30% increase in VIP attendance on the Preview Day. For the 11th edition this year, the strong showing of both collectors and curators underscored the significance of Design Miami/ Basel as a major venue for viewing major works on the market. From 14–19 June, the impressive array of exhibitors — 46 in all, hailing from — presented the very best in historical and collectible design at Messe Basel.
Beyond the richness and variety of the participating galleries, Design Miami/ Basel included several special projects and exhibitions. At the entrance to the fair, the Design at Large exhibition featured installations by nine designers, invited by curator Martina Mondadori Sartogo to interpret the theme of nature and outdoor living. Participants included Alexandra Kehayoglou, Tom Price, Kiki van Eijk, Ron Arad, Jean Prouvé, Kengo Kuma, Masatoshi Izumi & Koichi Hara, Enzo Enea, and DIMORESTUDIO.
Meanwhile, the Swarovski Designers of the Future Award recognized the talent of three up-and-coming design studios: German-Icelandic duo Studio Brynjar & Veronika, sound artist Yuri Suzuki, and glass artist Anjali Srinivasan. Artek and Kvadrat commissioned the Collectors Lounge from Berlin-based architects Kuehn Malvezzi. And last but certainly not least, a special exhibition on Zaha Hadid paid tribute to the late architect, who passed away earlier this year.
