New Thakoon Boutique in NYC
Thakoon has launched its first boutique with a concrete interior as coolly feminine as its wares.
Designed by SHoP Architects, the new Thakoon boutique on Wooster Street in New York features 2 000 sqf of hand-poured curved concrete walls by Fernando Mastrangelo. Typically associated with Brutalist angles, the cement has instead been poured in small layered batches over the period nine weeks to create elegant undulations.
Contrasted with stone display elements from Travertino Rapolano and raw white oak walls, the interior exudes the classically informed future-looking easy-to-wear fashion that Thai-American designer Thakoon Panichgul has become known for through his collaborations with The Gap and Target. The boutique’s opening comes shortly after the launch of the online store, and marks the designer’s move away from a wholesale strategy.
“It was important the space have what I feel is a distinctly American sensibility, which has always resonated with me: cool, youthful, effortless, and above all, authentic,” says Panichgul. “This is who our girl is, and who I design for.”
Floor-to- ceiling stacked glass windows on the double-height store façade invite clients into the renovated six-floor historically landmarked former cast iron building. The dramatic double-height lighting fixtures are by London-based designer Michael Anastassiades, and the woven-leather furniture pieces by Brooklyn-based designers Vonnegut/Kraft.
