The challenges civilisation faces as we propel ourselves into the future is the theme of Chamber gallery’s debut at DesignMiami/ 2016.

A special commission by Studio Job, entitled Car Crash, forms the centrepiece of the provocative exhibition. Other work includes Niek Pulles’s car seats covered with architectural and industrial forms inspired by the streets of Amsterdam. A bookcase by Jiří Pelcl and coffee table by Dimitri Bähler both question the functionality of object forms. Hilda Hellström’s metamorphosing anthracite illustrates the origin of the material. Mimi Jung’s hand-woven mohair wall uncovers the tension between the desire for isolation and the need to participate with the outside world. Azuma Makoto’s table and sofa, playfully camouflaged with fictional moss, shows how nature tries to infiltrate our lives. Applying Baroque science, Markéta Kratochvílová & Tadeáš Podracký have produced a suite of delicately meditative futuristic lighting objects. Also looking to the past to transcend the future, Ika Künzel has preserved antique glass objects in a unique ultraviolet curing process.

Chamber was founded in 2014 by Juan Garcia Mosqueda. A 21st century cabinet of curiosities, the New York gallery is a shrine for unusual objects and design experimentation. This will be its first full exhibition at Design Miami, following their participation in the Design Curio programme last year.
