Drawing in the crowds at this month’s Collective Design Fair, Brooklyn-based duo Fort Standard debuted Qualities of Material. A rigorous investigation into the potential of noble materials, the new collection pushes the physical and metaphoric constraints of wood, stone and leather into new crafted efficiencies. Reducing the mass of composite normally associated with weight, Relief Stone Cabinate employs a milled motif to provide a new level of lightness without compromising strength. With a similar triangulated technique, thin maple slats layer and sack into stools and tables. Assemblage pieces achieve the same reduction in weight. Stacked Leather Chair offers up a suggestion to how the natural material can be rolled-up into different constructed components; form solid armrest and legs. The tactility of such materials, shaped into rationalised systems, are only links into the true value of structural ingenuity.
