Pierre Paulin is having a moment. This summer, the legendary French designer behind iconic chairs such as the Mushroom (1960), Orange Slice (1960), Ribbon (1966), and Tongue (1967) is the subject of a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou, on view through 22 August, revisiting his 50-year career in furniture and interior design. And although he passed away in 2009, his family has launched Paulin, Paulin, Paulin, a company dedicated to honoring his legacy and revisiting rare original designs produced in limited editions. True to Paulin’s high standards for his forward-looking, sculptural approach to furniture design, longtime collaborators Michel Chalard oversees the production of these pieces, often working with French and Italian craftsmen who originally worked with Pierre himself.

A number of Paulin, Paulin, Paulin pieces are currently on view at Galerie Perrotin’s New York outpost, following an exhibition in Paris last year, including models and prototypes of works designed over the course of 26 years. From bespoke furnishings for the Palais d’Iéna in Paris to ‘unreleased’ projects for Herman Miller, the show in New York has been updated from the Paris presentation. The current iteration of the exhibition features a new version of the “Diwan” carpet (1984), the “Rosace” coffee table (1971), and two sofas designed for the cultural center of Rennes (1968). Meanwhile striking pieces as the “Déclive” chair and “Cathédrale” table made their way across the Atlantic

These lesser-known furniture designs are exhibited alongside video works by ván Argote, ERRÓ, Jesper Just, and Xavier Veilhan. Pierre Paulin at Galerie Perrotin New York opened on June 22 and runs until August 19.
