MM XVII by Matter Made
Faye Toogood, Oeuffice, Pedro Paulo Venzon, Philippe Malouin and Jonah Takagi have created elegant work for American label Matter Made.
Matter released a sophisticated new edition of Matter Made, its in-house range of lighting, furniture and objects, during Milan Design Week. Founder and creative director of the New York gallery, showroom and manufacturer, Jamie Gray invited designers to produce a piece in their own creative signature, proving just how complementary Faye Toogood, Oeuffice, Pedro Paulo Venzon, Philippe Malouin and Jonah Takagi‘s designs are.
The minimalist works display a distinct veneration for craftsmanship and high-quality finishing. A combination of natural materials and sculptural silhouettes imbues the work with a confident and playful personality. For instance, Malouin’s modular Arca lighting system and essentialist Pa Hook for coats, simultaneously hark back to classic Eames and introduce dynamic contemporary contrasts.
Toogood’s first lighting collection, Puff Ball, celebrates the irregularity of raw berglass and tumbled aluminium with forms inspired by wild mushrooms. The series consists of a wall sconce, table lamp, floor lamp and room divider. Also using just two forms — a tube and a slab — is Nero Marquina’s Slon Collection, including the bold Slon Dining Table.
Takagi’s Setup Candle Holder also maximises austere aluminium. As does the aluminium monolith Centina by Oeuffice, designed as a ‘totem for living’ or domestic altarpiece infused with architectural principles. Venzon’s elegantly modest Avoa and Pudica chairs epitomise minimalist lightness.
