In its tenth season of exhibitions, our sister gallery Spazio Nobile presents Land/Scapes. The exhibition was inspired by the famous painting “Landscape with The Fall of Icarus” by Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca.1560). This historic work is part of the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Brussels and depicts both the beauty and tranquility of the landscape. However, it also depicts hidden violence with Icarus, almost unnoticeably, drowning in the background of the painting. Like the painting, the works in the exhibition aim to transport the viewers into landscapes and trigger the sense of meditation and strangeness that these wild outdoor spaces stir.

Land/Scapes brings together the diverse mediums of photography, ceramics, textiles and wood through the works of Carine Boxy (BE), Kaspar Hamacher (BE), Francois Moret (FR), Bela Silva (PT) and Piet Stockmans (BE). Despite the physical differences in the pieces they are united in their quest to find a sense of harmony and capture the essence of landscapes in their work. As Piet Stockmans says about his ceramic works: “Remember that you are dust and to porcelain, you shall return”.

The landscape has been a constant inspiration for artists and creatives throughout history. Land/Scapes will humbly add another small chapter to this grand tradition.

Land/Scapes will open at Spazio Nobile on November 23 and be on display until February 17, 2019.
