Frédéric de Goldschmidt: Selections from the Collection

Inaspettatamente, an exhibition that features 300 works by 240 artists from the collection of Frédéric de Goldschmidt, is on view at Cloud Seven co-working space until January 30, 2022. Inaspettatamene, which means ‘unexpectedly, takes its name from an embroidered work by the conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994). Boetti is known for having questioned the notion of authorship and set up processes of delegation to others, notably through his works in letter grids, arazzi, and his political cartographies, mappe, produced in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the 1970s and 1980s.

Frédéric de Goldschmidt and his co-curator Grégory Lang conceived the exhibition by imagining how Boetti would have viewed a collection in which he is very present. The diverse works by the 240 artists exhibited have been selected through the prism of the themes of Boetti’s process and personality, reflecting the diversity and complexity of the collection. A dialogue emerges from his practice and fascination with seriality and process by experimenting with many different modes of production and interplay between order and disorder. Many of the pieces echo several of these axes in a direct thematic link or on a more intuitive level. Among the key themes, the exhibition brings together works that explore time, duality, otherness and the artist’s position in the world with poetic, social and geopolitical commentaries, and reflections on the state of our uncertain times.

Among the 315 works are installations, sculptures, paintings and videos by international artists from different generations such as Cory Arcangel, Kader Attia, Babi Badalov, Mirosław Bałka, Walead Beshty, Carlos Bunga, Hanne Darboven, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Edith Dekyndt, Cristina Garrido, Shilpa Gupta, Hoa Hong, Christian Jankowski, Gabriel Kuri, Richard Long, Jonathan Monk, Roman Opalka, Claudio Parmiggiani, Analia Saban, Tomás Saraceno, Katrín Sigurdardottir.

In conjunction with the exhibition Inaspettatamente is the release of Full House: One Space, Two Shows, 307 Artists, and 400 Pieces from The Frédéric de Goldschmidt Collection, a book detailing two exhibitions that took place in the same building five years apart, published by Mercatorfonds and distributed by Yale University Press. The publication is rich in contributions from Nicolas Bourriaud (curator, art critic, founder of the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and of Mo.Co, Montpellier) and Dirk Snauwaert (curator, founder and artistic director of WIELS, Brussels), Donatienne de Séjournet (art historian), Agata Jastrząbek (art historian), as well as interviews with Christine Jamart (critic of art, founder and publisher of l’Art Même) and Grégory Lang (curator and art critic) with Frédéric de Goldschmidt.
