Object Rotterdam 2015
Pulling in design enthusiast from cold and gray winter days, Object Rotterdam – 5-8 February – brought together over 30 young to established talents for a series of strategically curated exhibitions within the dramatic setting of the SS Rotterdam cruise-liner. In correlation with other events throughout this port city – Art Rotterdam, Contemporary Rotterdam to name but a few – this unique event revealed the Netherlands undying strength in design – a force categorized by the ability to make and stick to bold statements – but also the work of international masters like Bořek Šípek.
Having run the lucrative cruise lane between Rotterdam and New York, the former Holland Line SS Rotterdam is still in operation as a hotel – stationed on Katendrecht dock. During Object Rotterdam, certain reception areas and glass-enclosed promenades were appropriated as exhibition halls – bringing visitors through most levels of the ship. A selection of staterooms were re-designed by specific talents – with scenographic angles running the gamut between a backstage fashion show or urban street-scape.
