However – at the moment, Istanbul, like most cities, doesn’t offer a single reference point, where inhabitants and visitors can find a concentration of all of the above. We are proposing to create a new kind of museum, where all these components can co-exist in one place. In this “museum of museums” the only mission is to be “alive” or permanent, everything else – the focus, the presentation, the balance of components – is in constant flux. Different aspects of Istanbul and its history will be explained in The Core –where facts about Istanbul are categorized into topics that cover different aspects, supported by sample exhibition loan from existing institutions. A personal view will appear in The Whisper, where individual contributions, renowned personalities – working in various mediums – convey their intimate relationship with Istanbul. Today’s issues will find their place in The Hub, through research, debate and discussion. We propose a Living Istanbul Museum that isn’t frozen in time but that lives –conveying the city’s layered complexity through The Core, HUB and Whisper – that coexist under one roof. At the same time, this museum acts a new platform for existing institutions, with the potential to have a closer connection to the public as a civic lens that contributes to the form, personality and quality of the city – not just as an observer but as an active participant – equally relevant for Istanbulites and Istanbul’s visitors.
