The first glass designers that blow glass by themselves are Gamze Araz Eskinazi and Yasemin Sayınsoy from Camekan. It’s what makes them different and they adore team work. When the positive, happy and calm side of Araz Eski nazi, who studied interior architecture and environmental design, is combined with the funny, curious and hardworking side of Sayınsoy, who studied business and worked in shipping trade; Camekan was founded. The designers say “We have bee n doing this since 2003 when we were wondering how we could reshape the things that made us unhappy in daily life. Our job is very enjoyable but you can’t do it if you don’t like doing it. We wanted to share our joy and happiness, and discovered that we could do it with the designs we created by glassblowing. We design functional, arty, architectural and recyclable objects. We apply the free glass blowing technique by ourselves and like using hot glass. However, everything that comes from nature and has a story can be our material; such as tree branches we pick from sea, seeds, metal and natural stones. Design is a fiction that is formed to serve a purpose with aesthetic concerns. According to us, besides functioning as expected, a good design should give the user feelings of being different and unique; it should be sensous.” They claim that design is equal to creating. They say “A design first should have a function, then aesthetic and emotional power. You also should have a good reason to design. A design should make its user smile. It should even be understandable, clear and definitely fun. As long as it does not serve the purpose of consumption trend of this age, any kind of environment-friendly, global, functional design that protects the planet and has a buyer is successful, we think. A design product should be liked for ages, be a pioneer of its age, be first and unique, and reflect the characteristics of its age to become a classic. A designer does not have boundaries on paper, but the boundaries of material define the boundaries of material in practice. Is not limitlessness some kind of a limit, anyway? We can definitely say that techniques and aesthetics of design blend together. However, those two are not enough. Other elements also blend together. An artist creates for himself; but a designer creates for the user. We have always been against trends. Design should come out of needs; not trends. We believe we are all great beings but success is about improving in the way you focus on and gaining experience. Even though design provides convenience since it is a field that involves many disciplines, expertise is important and necessary. We are working on evil eye right now. We have redesigned the evil eye talisman, one of Turkey’s symbols, with a sculpture-like and artistic interpretation, and added a different perspective into it by glass blowing. One of our friends wrote a mythos for them. So, we have made each evil eye talisman to be hung on the wall unique. We have also designed different, sculpture-like lighting fixtures, wallboards, and paravans to be displayed in December for architectural projects.”
