Charting Art, Design and Architecture: CHART Art Fair 2018

CHART Art Fair merges the worlds of art, design and architecture in a city-wide event in Copenhagen. Bringing together a selection of Nordic galleries and international creative the fair examines and celebrates the cultural sector through three categories: ART FAIR, CHART DESIGN and CHART SOCIAL.

This sixth edition of the fair is the first under the helm of the director Nanna Hjortenberg whose vision sees an expanded design section of the fair and an increase in site-specific works. From the massive program, TLmag picks out 10 highlights of the fair to look out for in 2018:

CHART EMERGINE

Nordic design is renowned for its classic minimalist style but what do the upcoming generation of creatives envision for the future Nordic design? Find out at CHART emerging, a group exhibition curated by Helga Christoffersen, Associate Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.

CABLES DATA BY ALICE ANDERSON

British/French artist Alice Anderson is showing her work for the first time in the Nordic Region. Cables Data is an immersive site-specific sculpture that will be installed in the central room of the Den Frie. The topical work questions our relationship to physical objects in an increasingly digital world, by creating what she refers to as ‘memorised objects’.

CHART ARCHITECTURE COMPETION

Five structures from the winners of the architectural competition will create a quasi-town in the courtyard of the Kunsthal Charlottenburg. This year’s brief was OPEN-SOURCE which challenged participants to explore the potential or sharing, modular design and cross-disciplinary collaborations. The competition encourages young designers to think in new ways about architecture. On display will be FRAME a flat-pack house inspired by art transport, OPEN RESOURCE showing the potential of recycle plastic, THE MANY CHAIR PAVILLION which uses residual material from CNC open-source produces chairs, TIGHT KNIT which makes use of a traditional technique in an up-scaled manner and CLOUD 9.0 which combines the idea of infinite knowledge and a strict physical form.

What happens when a digital gallery comes to an art fair? Find out at their exhibition where they will exhibit pieces that embody their principal aim of establishing a global design collaboration and celebrating the diversity of contemporary creative cultures.

SCULPTURES BY TONY CRAGG

Don’t miss a chance to see the works of renowned artist Sir Tony Cragg. Knighted in 2016 for his services to the visual arts and Anglo-German relation and winner of numerous awards including the Turner Prize, Cragg’s sculptures will be exhibited by Galleri Andersson Sanström.

OWNERSHIP, EXCHANGE, THEFT

A series of talks on September 1 and 2 will explore the slippery issues of ownership, money, morals, truth and cultural production. The various talks will be moderated by leading thinkers Mark Rappolt, Editor of ArtReview, Oliver Basciano, International Editor of ArtReview and Justin McGuirk, Chief Curator of the Design Museum, London.

SINUS BY PEARLA PIGAO

Exhibited at the Designmuseum Denmark, Sinus investigates how music and sounds can be materialised through textiles woven with metal threads. It is an interactive “musical instrument” in which visitors transform into co-creators by activating the work with their presence.

CHART COURTYARD PROGRAM

In 2017 this area attracted more than 9000 people to its opening concert. This year a weekend of DJs, performances and live acts will take place in the Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s courtyards. And, best of all, the events are all free!

CHART x THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE/CORPUS

Japanese artist Masaru Iwai, German choreographer Sebastian Matthias, Swedish composer Ida Ludén, and the dancers of the Royal Danish Theatre’s experimental dance company, Corpus, invite you to get involved in the creative process of ‘Ghosting’. Visitors will be part of an exploration of how ubiquitous smartphone devices have forever changed how we communicate.

SUNSHINE – UNIQUE UTILITARIAN OBJECT BY OLE JENSEN

See the charismatic and jolly ceramics of Danish designer and artist, Ole Jensen’s series Sunshine – Unique Utilitarian Objects. They were produced from the simple starting point and challenge of using just the clay pinching technique to create. This grew into a range of quirky pieces that will be displayed at Køppe Contemporary Objects.
