COLLECTIBLE 2023

COLLECTIBLE, the international fair for 21st century collectible design, opens its sixth edition running from 9-12 March, in the Sheds of Tour & Taxis in Brussels. PAF atelier has been invited to design the public area and Studio Volfram has been asked to develop the booth layout. There are six main sections to the fair, three of which are new.

The tightly curated fair features both established and emerging galleries, design studios and architects, which were selected from a distinguished international committee with members working across the creative industries including Michelin 2-star chef and owner Nick Bril (Belgium); General Director of the MAK Museum in Vienna Lilli Hollein (Austria); architect and designer Glenn Sestig (Belgium); and Vice-Chancellor of the London Royal College of Art Dr. Paul Thomson (UK).

The 2023 edition will feature three new sections: NEW GARDE, ARCHITECT <=> DESIGNER, and DIALOGUE. New Garde was established this year as a way to recognize and support new galleries and their artists. Participating galleries include GOOD SESSIONS (Marseille), SALT (Tel Aviv), fābula gallery (Moscow), Maison Commun (Brussels); collectives include NeeNee Collective (Amsterdam/Eindhoven), Laurids Gallée with Heim + Viladrich (Rotterdam / Montpellier), Diego Faivre, Pierre Castignola and Hugo Beheregaray (Eindhoven), Ia Kutateladze (Berlin/Tbilisi), and Arthur Vandergucht (Belgium). Also participating in New Garde is NeeNee Collective, launched in 2016 by South-Korean graduates that went from Hongik University in South Korea to the Design Academy Eindhoven (Ahn, Hansol Kim, Kurina Sohn, Sho Ota, Shun Yoon and June Park), and established to promote a new generation of design, strongly showing narratives in their work and unusual experiment in shapes and material.

Architect < = > Designer is new platform solely dedicated to architects and interior designers who wish to showcase furniture they have recently developed. The work was selected by Nicolas Schuybroek. The Dialgoue section is curated by Jean François Declerq. He has invited galleries to show pieces from the 1980s-90s in dialogue with contemporary pieces.

The CURATED section is led by designer and artist Leo Orta, and poses the question: ‘What is your story?’, showcasing collaborations between the new generation of designers and the power in collective and grassroots movements.

The MAIN and BESPOKE sections continue to innovate and surprise. In the Main fair, highlights include returning gallery, Mia Karlova, who will have a daring display of functional and sculptural works, including furniture and objects by Prague-based artist Vadim Kibardin, who uses scraps of used paper and food packing waste to create functional design pieces; and the Rotterdam-based gallery VIVID, which is participating for the first time in COLLECTIBLE and is showing work by the Armenian-born designer Noro Khachatryan.

In the Bespoke section, which focuses on unusual and innovative materials such as high tech, bio-material, recycled material and special hand-made artisanal techniques, some highlights include Beirut-based designer Carla Baz, who will feature a collection that is an elegy to marble; Samuel Accoceberry and Bruce Cecere, who are exploring the limits of metal work to create distinctive furniture and lighting; and ÆTHER/MASS, the brainchild of product and interior designer Davy Grosemans, will present seven objects balancing on the border of utility, sculpture and experiment.

In addition to the main fair, COLLECTIBLE will host a series of VIP events, including studio visits with Brussels-based designers and presentations with local galleries, including Spazio Nobile and Maniera.
