Studio da Gema, Collective Design Fair 2015
The Studio Design da Gema is a manifesto of Brazilian designer David Elia, founder of the brand, who, since his childhood, has been in a deep resonance with Rio de Janeiro. Elia has created a special installation inspired by his surroundings in modern-day Brazil that serves as the backdrop for this year’s Café at Collective Design fair. His studio embodies the pureness of Brazil’s vision, whose epitome is drawn by the vision of its designer. The installation Rio de Janeiro, May 2014 presents a reinterpretation of the documented violent crimes that occurred within the city of Rio during the month of May 2014, one year ago. By researching criminal events on the website ondefuiroubado.com.br, Elia was able to pinpoint the exact location and number of crimes which totaled 210. Set against an all-white backdrop-white being on the official flag of Rio and a color that symbolizes innocence, purity, beauty and hope-Elia’s installation makes use of his signature piece, the white plastic monobloc Stray Bullet chair, riddled with gold eyelets to depict these crimes. Elia’s choice of a ubiquitous plastic chair bridges awareness of violence on a regional and an international level. Within the café on the main wall and two large dining tables 210 eyelets will be used – each representing one crime.
