Fine Tuning by Claudia Moreira Salles
Early last month, Espasso opened Fine Tuning; a retrospective spotlighting the craft-based work of Claudia Moreira Salles. Transforming its expansive Tribeca space into a series of museum-grade galleries, the Brazilian art design specialist highlighted various furniture and accessory projects developed by the São Paulo-based master. A strong focus on the Sintonia Fina lighting collection demonstrates how the designer explores new materials, different modes of production, and innovative technology. Employing local wood as a starting point, Salles’ experimented with the rare Brazilian Niobium metal. Traditionally used in aeronautics to strengthen steel, the composite was formed as semi-spherical lamps shapes and circular deflectors. When cured in a chemical bath, the material revealed various colour profiles. Such an iterative process kept Salles within production at every step. Presenting the designer’s prowess in furniture, Espasso also exhibited her recent Stand by coat hanger; matching noble wood with concrete and new levels of functionality. Playfully magnetic coffee tables, on view, still characterise the designer’s work as refined, minimal and expressive.
