FLAX Chair Leads Winners of 2016 Dutch Design Awards
Among the myriad events and exhibitions throughout Eindhoven, the 15th annual Dutch Design Week culminated with the Dutch Design Awards ceremony on Saturday 29 October. The headliner was Christien Meindertsma‘s FLAX Chair, which won the prestigious Future Award in the Product category. A remarkable example of a rigorous design process, the chair is the result of several years’ worth of research into flax as a material. Meindertsma went so far as to buy a flax farm along the way, and collaborated with Dutch companies such as Label Breed and Enkev to bring the FLAX Chair to market.
Product is one of six main categories for the Dutch Design Awards. Other winners included: Dikke van Dale by Studio Joost Grootens (Communication); Sistaaz of the Castle by Duran Lantink and Jan Hoek (Fashion); Biesbosch MuseumEiland by Studio Marco Vermeulen (Habitat); Designs for Flies by Frank Kolkman (Service & Systems); and Uruzgan’s Legacy by Specialist Operations (Design Research). The organisation also recognises the Best Client and Best Young Designer, awarded to Brabantia and Tom van Soest, respectively.
The finalists in each category were exhibited at the Veemgebouw space for the duration of DDW, 22–30 October, where the public was invited to vote on its favorite design. The Crystal Houses by MVRDV, ABT & TU DELFT and POESIA won the most votes, aggregated from both on-site and online voting.
