Heimtextil, an international trade fair for home textiles, sets out key trends in the home textiles for the following season. This year, the fair commissioned a team of six international design agencies to identify four key trends for the home for the season 2016–17. The key trends follow the theme of the fair, Well-being 4.0, which describes scenarios for soft furnishings that create an environment with a feel-good factor. The key trends all direct towards better quality of life and a greater sense of wellness, and depict living surroundings in which technology and science enjoy a symbiotic relationship with textiles and related materials.

The key trends, ‘Protect,’ ‘Energize,’ ‘Nourish’ and ‘Enrich,’ are looking for peace, balance and authenticity. Clean aesthetics and unfussy design of key trend ‘Protect’ defines domestic style, which offers protection both in physical and mental terms, and is based on notions of calmness, meditation and wellness. Whereas the colour palette of ‘Protect’ reflects purity and lightness, the colours of the trend ‘Energize’ shift between strong and weak contrasts. ‘Energize’ is intuitive and highly energetic trend, which links human beings with technology and leads to a new level of energy, and in which light is used as a material to create immaterial forms.

The trend ‘Nourish,’ instead, is a sustainable and ecological vision of well-being. In ‘Nourish,’ natural materials are paired with forward-looking designs, and dominant colours are green and earth tones.

The fourth, empowering trend, entitled ‘Enrich,’ brings fashion to interior design and explores opulence and highly ornamental elements often related with the cultural past, but which point to the future instead of the past. In ‘Enrich,’ saturated colours, metallic accents and iconic patterns embody a fusion of influence from East and West. •
