Hermès x Apple Watch: Luxury Meets Technology
Perhaps one of the most awaited events of Paris Fashion Week was the arrival of Apple Watch Hermès on 5 October 2015. The launching ceremony gathered the fashion cream to Hermès Rue de Sèvres boutique on Sunday evening to celebrate the arrival of an object that had already become a fetish for fashionistas. Fashion high society from Pierpaolo Piccioli, artistic director of Valentino, to Anna Wintour, matron of Vogue USA, flocked at one of the biggest Hermès boutique at the celebration hosted by Jonathan Ive, chief design officer of Apple.
The collaboration was natural to Ive, who is also the main designer of the watch.
“Apple and Hermès are both interested in the process of making that relates to the material and, of course, to the actual product that you’re aiming to fabricate. The preoccupation with utility and functionality is also one of the key similarities between us,” he states.
“It’s interesting that there are areas where technology is optimized – areas that also sometimes require a great deal of craftsmanship and expertise from an individual and, at times, also sophisticated design of automated processes.”
The watch collection consists of 38- and 42-millimetre stainless steel cases equipped with a customizable face with three dial designs inspired by Clipper, Cape Cod and Espace Hermès watches. The 38-millimetre case can be matched with single or double tour leather strap, the 42-millimetre case with a leather cuff strap.
