Bringing all corners of the world together, Downtown Design Dubai invites six fellow international design weeks to each showcase three emerging brands. Mounted as part of Dubai Design Week, Destinations spotlights the dynamism of creation in these cities. Between Mexico City, Beijing, Helsinki, Istanbul, Melbourne and San Francisco, many of these new players address lighting with their own twists. Whether it be clean geometry, the ingenious reference to a book, crystal refraction, a swing, or unique weaving technique, all offerings look to transform this most essential of resources.

Shown as part of Melbourne International Design Week illuminated stand, Lab De Stu-founder Andre Hnatojko designs highly modern and oversided Popper lamps while Ben Tovim plays with geometric structure and the intrinsic value of material. Christopher Boots‘ graphical pieces blend new and old world techniques. Opened like a book, Lumio lamps flock over San Francisco Design Week’s presence while Beijing Design Week showcases Moiré effect Eoq lamps. Saas Instruments innovate Helsinki Design Week with Alexander Lervik crystal glass Sparkle pendant and Sense Light Swing lamps. Rounding things off well, Mexico City’s Abierto Mexicano De Diseño presents Ediciones Jalapas‘ craft-led and pattern-projected solutions as well as Tributo‘s formally sound and materially-rich offerings. Specific materials reflect the different regions in which each of this light sources are created. With such a diversity of styles and applications, light’s sublime qualities might simply unify the planet.
