Lobmeyr: Met Series
Austrian heritage brand Lobmeyr marks the 50th-anniversary of its Hans Harald Rath-designed Met Series: 32 celestially-inspired chandeliers and 331 crystal sconces.
Austrian heritage brand Lobmeyr‘s golden jubilee celebration of its Met chandelier series coincides with the Opera Houses‘ 50th anniversary at Lincoln Center. On the occasion of NYCxDesign (New York Design Week), both prestigious institutions look back at the history of 32 Hans Harald Rath-designed celestial chandeliers; joined by a whopping 331 crystal sconces. In 1966, the Viennese designer worked closely with the Metropolitan Opera Houses’ modernist master architect Wallace K. Harrison and reportedly conceived drawings overnight. Based on a fasciation for the big bang theory and far flung galaxies, these celestial compositions combined polished brass, hand-cut crystal and pearl clusters. Restored by Lobmeyr in 2008, they yet again cascade through the cultural venue’s expansive foyer; playing into the space’s iconic status.
Vienna-based crystal powerhouse Lobmeyr has promoted the value of craftsmanship throughout the better part of two centuries. Run by the same family for six generations, the heritage brand has maintained a love of material and strong understand for the emotional quality of its products. Lobmeyr was instrumental during the wildly influential Viennese modernist movement; working with the likes of legends Adolf Loos and Josef Hoffmann. Over the decades, the glass house has continuously innovated. Contemporary projects have included collaborations with Ted Muehling, Michael Anastassiades, Formafantasma, Helmut Lang, Stefan Sagmeister, Marco Dessi and Sebastian Menschhorn.
