This may, Istanbul’s art scene welcomed its largest venue yet. Dirimart Galeri opened its seconds 1000 square-metres space and sculpture garden, designed by New York-based Studio MDA. Curated by Heinz Peter Schwerfel, the inaugural Surface and Beyond exhibition features pieces by Turkish and international talents: Franz Ackermann, Haluk Akakçe, Autoban, Ayşe Erkmen, Bernard Frize, Isaac Julien, Sarah Morris, Shirin Neshat, Eva Rothschild, Tomás Saraceno and Ebru Uygun. All works on view push the phyiscal boundaries of traditional mediums – painting, sculpture and film – to new limits. Whereas the concept of the ‘exposed surface’ is investigated from various perspectives, the works feature political, social and religious.

Surface and Beyond: till 30 July
Dirimart Galeri: Irmak Caddesi 11, Istanbul
