David Altmejdat Xavier Hufkens
Xavier Hufkens gallery announces L’air exhibition by renowned Canadian artist David Altmejd on view from 4 March—9 April 2016. In his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, he presents a new series of bronze figures together with a group of sculptural matrices in mirrored glass, and ensemble of sculpted heads. The antithetical nature of his works on display highlight key themes such as the human figure, reflection and structure.
Known for severed werewolf head sculptures, Altmejd investigates sculpture’s potential to “create energy.” He creates sculptures, suffused with ornament, that blur distinctions between interior and exterior, surface and structure, representation and abstraction.
He is fascinated by the beauty and mystery of the natural world. He uses armatures that convey both human and supernatural energies to explore how objects grow, transform, and reshape themselves. His diverse ouvre encompasses breathtaking labyrinthine constructions in Perspex, strange hybrid beings, colossal human figures, and complex mirrored structures.
Altmejd’s Giants exhibition also opens at the Forum of Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium on 18 March (through August 21, 2016).
L’air runs until 9 April 2016 at Xavier Hufkens gallery, 6 rue St-Georges, St-Jorisstraat, Brussels.
