1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Returns to Marrakech
1-54 art fair celebrates 10 years with a much anticipated return to Marrakech and an exciting new edition opening on February 9th at the iconic La Mamounia.
1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, the leading international art fair dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora, marks its 10-year anniversary with a much-anticipated return to Marrakech after a three-year hiatus. From February 9-12, 2023, 1-54 will welcome 20 exhibitors from Africa, South America, Europe and the United States to the recently refurbished and ever-iconic La Mamounia hotel. Eight of the galleries in attendance are from the African continent, with four galleries from Morocco. There will be works by over 60 artists working across an array of painting and sculpture to mixed media and installation, including pieces by Maya Inès Touam, Mariam Abouzid Souali, Ismail Zaidy, Bathelemy Toguo and Omar Ba.
Founding Director of 1-54, Touria El Glaoui, commented: “Finally, after 3 years away from our partners, friends, and family in Marrakech, we are delighted to announce our return to the beautiful La Mamounia hotel for our fourth fair on the African continent. We recently celebrated the fair’s 10th year anniversary edition and what a perfect way to follow up from this than with the return to our intimate and much anticipated fair in Morocco.”
Since its launch in London, in 2013, 1-54 has established itself as an essential player in the art fair circuit, giving voice and visibility to important galleries and artists from Africa and the diaspora. With editions in New York, London and Marrakech, and pop-up events in Paris, 1-54 has a global reach and a distinctive vision as a curated art fair. Through its partnerships with Christie’s auction house and Artsy, where people will be able to explore, collect and connect to all the participating galleries throughout the fair, 1-54 extends beyond the physical fair to offer more opportunities for engagement.
In addition, there will be a full programme of events across the city in connection with the fair. Participating institutions include Jajjah by Hassan Hajjaj, MACAAL (Musée d’Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden), MAP Marrakech (Musée des Arts de la Parure), Malhoun 2.0 and Al Maqam (artists’ residence) among others.
