Helsinki Design Week gets underway on September 6th, with a city-wide series of exhibitions, programming events and openings. The main stage of Design Week will be held at Paasivuorenkatu 3, an historic bank building in the Hakaniemi district. An on-site bar, built in collaboration with Marimekko, will serve as a central gathering place for visitors and exhibitors between September 11-14th. Paasivuorenkatu will feature various design and architectural installations as well as host talks and events, including a 4-night series PechaKucha talks, with each night devoted to a different theme, including fashion and new materiality; architecture; creative direction and Marimekko’s legacy; and the new Helsinki design and architecture map.

The theme of the 19th edition of HDW is ‘Underneath’, an idea that means to look at the behind the scenes or development phase of any object, project or festival. This creative process that is required for any physical results, but which is often left aside in favour of talking about any final object or event. ‘Underneath’ brings these pre-announcement stages to the surface and dives deep into the design process. “Design is still sadly often seen as a surface layer, a visual addition at the end of projects. Although beauty and harmony are necessities, there is a huge untapped, structural power of change in the design industry”, says Helsinki Design Week’s Programme Director Anni Korkman.

Other highlights of the week include the Design Market and Collectors’ Market on the first floor of the Cable Factory, local neighbourhood open studios, Design Diplomacy events in which ambassadors will welcome HDW guests into their homes for a conversation. Aalto University will host the exhibition: Designs for a Cooler Planet, organized by students and researchers, and the Habitare Fair geared for interior design and professionals.

Additionally, the programme includes numerous Companion and Satellite events. For the full programme visit: helsinkidesignweek.com and @helsinkidesignweek
