Muller Van Severen at Massimo De Carlo
Belgian design duo Muller Van Severen showed four striking screens at Massimo De Carlo during Milan Design Week.
Muller Van Severen continue to explore their self-described “landscapes of living” with their striking new collection, Fireworks. Shown by Massimo De Carlo during Milan Design Week, the collection comprises four screen pieces called Paravents.
Manufactured by Emaillerie Belge, the screens are assemblages of enamel-coated metal sheets of different shapes, colours and heights. As a form, the screen is understood to be an object that’s primary function is to manipulate space. Whether to define, encircle or separate, the screens were envisioned as abstract compositions. They still bear the Muller Van Severen signature though: universal forms with a twist.
Exhibiting these spatial interruptions was made all the more dramatic by the circular room and its trapezoidal windows in the Kremlin. The building is the offices of BINOCLE architecture studios and is renowned for its circular ground plan.
A husband-and-wife team based in Ghent, Belgium, Fien Muller and Hannes van Severen have been working together since 2011. A photographer and sculptor respectively, the collaboration emerged from an invitation to conceive an exhibition together. They are currently collaborating with architects Robbrecht and Daem on the new building for Belgian public broadcasting company VRT.
