Body Building by Atelier Biagetti, Secondome
Poking fun at society’s obsession with perfect anatomy – the quest for unattainable beauty – curator Maria Cristina Didero and Rome-based platform Secondome mount Atelier Biagetti‘s Body Building series at Design Miami/ (2-6 December). Employing the critical potential of narrative-based forms, the Milanese duo blends high quality material with the perceivably unsophisticated elements of almost archaic gym scenarios; entirely functional yet ironic and almost campy designs that can been brought back into the domestic sphere. Much like a punching bag – reversed into a metal bar footed bench – Cavallina Nera is composed of upholstered black leather and alcantara with layers of synthetic netting and straps. Yoga embroidered leather carpets hark back to the scrimmage lines of basketball courts. Anelli gives new function to pull up handles as neon ring pendant lamps are strung up by electric cords rather than rubber strands. The actually lights are held in place by pony skin supports, a far cry from less noble materials normally associated with our urban gyms, with the former interpretation certainly achieved with a better attention to craft.
