Boro – The fabric of Life at Domaine de Boisbuchet, FR
This summer, apart from the design workshops who are internationally renown, the Domaine de Boisbuchet presents” Boro – The Fabric of Life” which highlights the traditional Japanese art of patchwork. The fifty blankets, bags, shirts, pants, kimonos and other textile on show were made by poor farmers from scraps of fabric between 1850 and 1905. A small part of these objects has been borrowed from Japanese collections, Kyoto and Tokyo, but most come from the private collection of New York gallerist Stephen Szczepanek.
The history of art and design considers the principle of composing a work from existing works, or collage samples, as a thoroughly modern and contemporary way to consider artistic creation. “Boro – The Fabric of Life” unveils a relatively unknown chapter in the history of the craft and provides a source of inspiration for designers, artists and aficionados of today, but also especially food for thought for us as consumers.
