DMY Berlin
Opening on 11 June, the 13th edition of DMY Berlin takes on a new look and feel; becomes more selective and professional in nature. Berlin’s annual platform blends festival and fair as it moves into a new location – the former Kreuzberg Kraftwerk nightclub. The windowless industrial volume towers as a dramatic setting for both emerging brands, school thesis surveys and particularly innovative talents. With a theme that paradoxically asks us to look back into the future, the most prevalent red-line is up-cycling – addressing the forefront of design as not necessarily the production of new components but combining unlikely compositions, Firefighting equipment turned lighting – Firelamps by Polish duo Aleksandra Jakuc and Supon Bialystok – or new leather waste compressed solids – Structural Skin by Jorge Pendadés. In that same sprit, material experimentation is still in full swing as young designers reveal revived craft or new spins on now ubiquitous 3D-printing.
