Putting Dubai on the design map, Aljoud Lootah brings traditional Emirati craft to the fore in contemporary application. At this month’s Design Days Dubai, the multidisciplinary designer showcased her Double Square collection. Limited edition chairs, coffee tables and lamps reinterpret age-old arabesque motifs as geometric plays between two superimposed squares. With one form shifted 45-degrees, a series of open-structure and interlocking iterations were achieved. Carved locally in Carrara marble, the Unfolding Unity Stool plays on an additional treatment of concave and convex surfaces while the Double Square Coffee Table skilfully challenges the perception of stability.
