Nature’s revenge on urban sprawl seems evermore relevant these days. A hot topic at this month’s Design Days Dubai, Green Pompeii by Beirut-based Georges Amatoury Studio employs the miniaturised iconography of a skyline-geometry ‘flooded’ in green resin. However premonitory, this console design holds up in an encased shell, as a collage of polished stainless steel, gun metal, silver leaf patine, crystal epoxy, pigment and clear glass. A refractory gem, the density of its composition shines bright.

Such is the approach of principal George Amatoury, far from trends and championed in the crafting of resilient furniture. Materials and finishes are joined by architectonic dialogues between concavity and solidly; movement and stability; clean forms and coarse surfaces, artisanal and technological production. Limited edition works each result from a deep research transcending form, function and message.

Good evidence of this method can also be seen in the Eiffel bar stool and side table: taking obvious reference to the Paris landmark through cross structure cylindrical bases. Like its Green Pompeii cousin, the Carat series plays on skyscraper architecture – namely the new the sharp facades of the new World Trade Center. Both series were also on view at Design Days Dubai.
