GG-Loop’s Infection
Converging into a mathematical and biological happening, GG-Loop’s Infection scenography inspires a new furniture line and interdisciplinary performance-based film, developed by the Elephants and Volcanoes collective.
With an interior, furniture line and film, experimental Amsterdam-based architecture Firm GG-Loop teamed up with international interdisciplinary collective Elephants and Volcanoes to ‘staged’ a ‘naturally algorithmic’ showcase at last week’s Ventura Lambrate (Milan Design Week 2016. Drawing from previous facade refurbishment project Gentle Genius – in which the three-maned firm flexed their geometric and mathematic mussel – GG-Loops’s introduced the Infection. This interior backdrop played host to a family of three new furniture pieces, exploring modularity and temporarily as natural phenomena. Evolving with user needs, the Vibrio sofa, Diatom table and Zephrus cabinet adapt through the principle of duplication and aggregation; the very social concept that defines the firm’s cooperative practice.
The Vibrio sofa alludes to the natural transformation of organic structures. As a ‘breathing’ entity, it can form into innumerable constellations or mandalas. Molecular properties like bioluminescence inspire its visually responsive surface. It’s iridescent velvet fabric traces movements and creates ever changing patterns drawn by its use. Overall, the piece evokes the eternal transformation of live. In a similiar spirit, Diatom corresponds to the structure of living unicellular organism with a light open structure metal base. A glass top allows users to engage with this structure. Zephyrus is a polymorphic storage unit that reflects the transformative qualities of a butterfly. The piece is composed of a core and two wings accented by mirrors in its poly for conversion.
As a fourth interpretation, Elephants and Volcanoes conceived The Seed of Time. As something of a gesamtkunstwerk, the immersive performance-based short-film employed the prowess of molecular cuisine, music, dance, visual arts, photography, fashion, graphic, and industrial design to pose questions of use and domestic activity. With a political message, the film as looks to address the lack of new cultural interventions and progress in Italy.
