Ivan Toth Depeña Presents Lapse in Miami
You’ll never look at Miami the same way: Ivan Toth Depeña’s latest site-specific artwork “Lapse” is an Augmented Reality (AR) installation interwoven throughout the city.
Charlotte, NC-based artist Ivan Toth Depeña has returned to his native Miami for the latest chapter of his ongoing project The Fallen Sky Chronicles. Two years in the making, “Lapse” is an Augmented Reality (AR) installation that activates public space through a mobile app (as recently seen in the Pokémon Go phenomonenon). The revolutionary technology allows visitors to the public artworks — installed throughout Miami — to experience various visual and auditory fragments of the site-specific piece.
In each of six components, Depeña weaves the virtual world into the real. The Visions and The Collective are public murals, while The Sounds is an “audioscape” embedded in Mimai’s MetroMover. The Writings are digitally inscribed in Museum Park. The Sculpture adds an experiential layer to a previous commission by Depeña. Lastly, the Moment complements the urban elements as an AR-enhanced gallery space, Locust Projects.
The Fallen Sky Chronicles is a story about the possibilities of the digital world infecting and merging with the real one. Over the last several years, the project has taken various forms, from drawings and paintings to video and new media installations. Learn more about the latest chapter and download the app at the “Lapse” website.
