When contemporary artifacts derive from Literature and Fashion. Rooted in rich historical reference, Paris-based Krystof J. Lukasik’s designs explore the functional value of beauty. “I’ve always been a fan of things,” he describes, “but I’m not an industrial designer, creating inventions.” With a childhood and early education immersed in modern French literature, the Warsaw-native came to France to train as a language teacher but after a few years, Lukasik decided to pursue an entirely different vocabulary. Enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon, the young creative quickly found an affinity for product design. Internships with fashion houses Chloé, Maison Martin Margiela, and Natalia Brilli, threw the young talent into accessory design. A boost that brought him to Lausanne-based ECAL – eventually graduating from the groundbreaking Advanced Studies, Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme. “I choose this school to gain a sense of organization,” he explains. Today, he continues to work for brands like LVMH’s Loewe – looking to introduce a wider range of products – and partakes in one of Hermès’ Atelier du Savoir-faire. Easily the sum of his experience – pulling from an intellectual upbringing, historical aesthetics and fashion rearing – Pétrification brings in 17th-century Venetian stone-adhesion techniques to create triangular extrusions. Built from a spectrum of Serpentine marble, Ruoms limestone and volcanic rock, these objects serve as solid alternatives to the traditional bookmark.
