Even a well-read design aficionado might not be able to guess how Brussels played a small part in the broad recognition of glass as form of art. Stanislav Libensky was among the legendary artists whose work was exhibited in the Czech pavilion at the Expo 1958, which won the top honors at the exposition. Working with his wife and lifelong collaborator Jaroslava Brychtova, he made his name during the second half of the 20th century with cast sculptures and installations.

Lasvit is pleased to present an original set of chandeliers designed by Libensky for the Hotel Praha in the 1980’s. While this architectural icon was later demolished, the Czech glass company has preserved this sculptural lighting element. Composed of an array of vertical glass lanterns, the individual lights are characterized by a segmented concertina form. Taken together, the luminaires achieve a striking presence, augmented by the optical effect of the varied thickness of the glass.

Lasvit exhibited the “Praha” lamp as part of the “Via Lucis” presentation during the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
