Luxembourg Art Week’s Focus on Brussels
Exhibitors at Luxembourg Art Week will be divided into three complementary sections: Main Section, Take Off, and a new section: Focus. Brussels will be the first city highlighted in this new feature.
Instead of the usual 3 day fair, Luxemburg Art Week – like most design and art fairs this year – has decided to go completely digital Presenting 69 contemporary art galleries, institutions and artists’ associations from 9 represented countries (Luxembourg, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, UK, USA) — the 3D virtual space the fair has constructed takes into account the architecture and dimensions of the fair’s usual premises (Halle Victor Hugo), as well as the layout and lighting of their booths.
Another new addition to the fair is the “Focus” section — which, according to their press release — “showcases the strength and vitality of the contemporary art scene in a different city each year”. This year’s focus will be on Belgium’s capital city; presenting a selection of seven emerging art spaces and young galleries from Brussels. The selected galleries are: Archiraar Gallery, CAPS, Dauwens & Beernaert Gallery, Galerie DYS, Galerie Felix Frachon, Nationale 8 Gallery and Spazio Nobile.
The digital booth of Spazio Nobile, which is TLmag’s sister gallery, is an extension and part of ‘Season XVI- The New Age of Humanism’, which is on view until March 14th (2021) at the Brussels-based gallery. An exclusive series that’s available is by French artist Vincent Fournier — who’s “kintsugi” series is inspired by the age-old art with the same name and his love for the Japanese aesthetic. Able to sublimate flaws, “kintsugi” is a Japanese technique for repairing broken porcelain or ceramics using lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum powder. By choosing to magnify cracks and snags rather than hiding them, this technique avoids throwing out damaged parts, gives them a second life, and even transfigures them into luxurious pieces with illuminated veins.
The seven galleries selected for this focus by Luxembourg Art Fair are featuring a total of 38 emerging and established artists from around the world — with works ranging from contemporary painting and photography to sculpture and furniture. Alongside this broad range of artists, they each reflect the depth of what Brussels’ emerging art and design scene looks like and continues to strive for.
