Maison Perrier-Jouët: Unique Glass for Design Miami
Venice-based glass artist Ritsue Mishima creates a wide-scale glass installation and a set of unique glass bowls for champagne house Perrier-Jouët.
Champagne house Perrier-Jouët’s traditional collaborations with designers or artists continue with a partnership with Venice-based glass artist Ritsue Mishima. For the collaboration, Mishima has created a wide-scale glass installation and a series of unique ice buckets for champagne bottles for the champagne house. The ice bucket and the installation are showcased at Design Miami, a fair for collectible design, in Miami, USA, in early December 2015.
The ‘All’ombra della luce’ installation, which translates as ‘In the Shadow of Light,’ spreads over 60 square meters and is made of 1.400 handmade, round glass plates. Each of the five large blown ice bowls come with embedded round glasses for champagne, but also with traditionally-shaped, blown champagne glasses.
The works commissioned by the champagne house continue Ritsue Mishima’s signature of working with transparent glass and asymmetrical forms. In addition to light, the pieces represent bubbles of champagne in both the installation and the glasses.
Japanese-born Ritsue Mishima arrived to Venice in 1989, and began working on glass in 1996. She works with glass masters in Murano islands, where the glass plates of the installation, the glass bowls and the champagne glasses are blown.
The partnership with Ritsue Mishima follows collaborations with London-based designers Tord Boontje and Claire Coles, and Paris-based silverware company Christofle. Each partnership reflects the collaborators’ connections to nature. After the collaborations, the works created become a part of Maison Perrier-Jouët’s art collection.
The partnership between Mishima and the champagne house will reach until the end of 2016. After the initial phase at Design Miami in December, the collaboration will continue with a limited-edition gift set that will be revealed over the course of the year. •
