As New York-trained Mexican artist G.T. Pellizzi explains: Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian Jew who fled to Hollywood during the Nazi era. A multitalented polyglot, she established herself amongst different star-studded milieus but unbeknownst to most invented the concept of frequency hopping; the technology that paved the way for the wireless communication we all use today.

Paying homage to this unsung hero, Pellizzi collaborated with Mary Boone Gallery, Y Gallery and Steven Turner to mounted Pool Meditations for Hedy Lamarr at Hotel Americano (5-7 May) during Frieze Week and NYCxDesign. As the latest iteration of his Conduits series (also on view at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in Summer 2016), the works comprise exposed industrial-grade pipes and light fixtures; with different types of bulbs in various primary colours. These latest installations take the shape of overlapping musical scores; a direct reference to the piano which was Lamarr’s primary tool of investigation. One might even suggest that these minimalistic compositions elude to molecular structures. The works were on view at different venues throughout the hotel, including its patio, pool level and bar.

Already an important venue for many of the nearby Chelsea galleries, Hotel Americano has launched a new program offering artists a unique platform to present their work and establish new dialogues.
