The fifth edition of Collectible, the international fair for 21st-century collectible design, opens on May 20th at the Vanderborght Building in Brussels.

The fair includes a curated mix of established and emerging galleries, design studios and editors with a focus on unique and limited-edition pieces as well as bespoke commissions. There are several ‘sections’ within the fair that together create a dynamic and comprehensive look at the collectible design scene. French architect, Paul Cournet, has envisioned the scenography for the main entrance to the building that will mix recycled tennis balls with ecological foam.

Some highlights from the Main section of the fair include a group show at Belgian gallery, Maniera, with works by Bernard Dubois, Lukas Gschwandtner, Francesca Torzo and Studio Mumbai; Amsterdam-based Mia Karlova Galerie will feature new work by Sho Ota, Olga Engle, Jesse Visser, Coznitcki and Vadim Kibardin; and Galerie Revel, whose group exhibition of emerging artists explores both experimentation and know-how from the Global South with Humberto da Mata and Xanthe Somers, among others.

To mark its fifth anniversary, the fair is launching a new section, The Editors, dedicated to “pioneering and niche design labels,” which emphasize craftsmanship and experimentation. Included here is the new design label 13Desserts, French Cliché, LOMM Editions, PLUMBUM, Emaillerie Belge and Theoreme Editions.

The Curated Section will be the space “to explore radical experimentation and ground-breaking processes in design,” and will feature a curated exhibition conceived by Rotterdam-based collector and curator, Berry Dijktra, titled, “Escapism”.

This year, the Bespoke section “celebrates traditional crafts and noble materials”, with commissions and unique pieces by international design studios, among them: Maarten De Ceulaer, who is exhibiting new, colourful lighting inspired by stained glass, Brussels-based Ben Storms, who is creating unique pieces using a technique of thin slats of wood and textile, Pauline Esparon, who is showing two lamps made out of parchment and Mircea Anghel and DIM Atelier, who are collaborating on unique pieces made out of paper, old posters and wood panels.

Five young Belgian designers have been invited to exhibit new work as part of the fair’s Special Projects. Installed at Campari’s booth, the designers will present an object or piece of furniture that goes beyond functionality, and which is meant to be a piece passed on through generations.

Collectible runs from May 20 – 22, 2022.
