Design Miami/Basel fair just opens its doors and this is the reason why it is time to focus on some participants. Today it will be with Southern Guild – the South Africa’s foremost gallery for collectible, limited edition contemporary design. It is its third consecutive year of participation with works from the broader African continent. This gallery will present many participants designers: Andile Dyalvane, Astrid Dahl, Atang Tshikare + Art in the Forest, Babacar Niang, Beth Diane Armstrong, Bronze Age, Cheick Diallo, Conrad Hicks, Daniella Mooney, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Friday Jibu, Hamed Ouattara, Ian Garrett, Jop Kunneke, Justine Mahoney, Koop, Peter Mabeo, Philippe BousquetPorky Hefer, Wayne Barker + Paco Pakdoust, and Xandre Kriel. They all will exhibit their works in Basel. TLmag selects 3 designers: Porky HeferBeth Diane Armstrong and Astrid Dahl.

Seemo, a collaborative piece between Mabeo of Gaborone, and Cape Town’s Porky Hefer, which premiered at GUILD International Design Fair in Cape Town earlier this year, will form part of the line-up, as will Hefer’s latest addition to his range of leather-adorned human-scale nests, Catherine Esca – a luxurious hanging cocoon lined with sheepskin.

Astrid Dahl loves working with clay and creating forms because white clay creates a perfect pure canvas for light and dark to ‘shape’ the piece, capturing the presence of the flora.

Beth Diane Armstrong is a South African sculptor who lives and works in Johannesburg. Inspired by structures both internal/external, organic/architectural and fascinated with process and change, Armstrong’s work often seems to carry a tension between flowing natural forms and rigid geometric constructions.
