The private foundation – whose mission is to support contemporary art – Thalia Art Foundation is delighted to present Wabi Sabi Shima exhibition which will take place from 24 April to 24 May, 2015 at Hangar H18. This exhibition brings together a selection of artists of Japanese contemporary scene in dialogue with European artists influenced by the rising sun. More than 60 works are presented with several new productions or never exhibited in Europe. Wabi Sabi Shima is imagined by its commissioners – Nathalie Guiot and Philippe Terrier-Hermann – as a journey of this culture whose aesthetics praised wear, nature, simplicity without denying the contemporary realities, policy developments, collective memory or Land-based violence. This exhibition shows the beauty of perfection and chaos in the Nippon archipelago. Wabi-Sabi is the embodiment of Japanese beauty, and a concept that illustrates key notions of Japanese aesthetics: Wabi for refinement and Sabi for exploring the process of weathering over time. This exhibition is like a journey into the heart of a culture that celebrates the perfection of imperfection, nature and simplicity without eschewing politics, collective memory, or terrestrial violence.
