5VIE Presents Herringbones by Raw Edges
In its third edition as of the most recent Salone del Mobile, 5VIE presented a new collection and on-site performance by design studio Raw Edges. For five days in April, Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer created and exhibited “Herringbones” in Spazio Sanremo in the heart of Milan.
The London-based duo developed a process of dip-dying planks of jelutong timber and southern yellow pine at a 45° angle to achieve a polychromatic herringbone effect. The result vaguely resembles an ombre or gradient, while closer inspection reveals a series of discrete diagonals.
“Herringbones” by Raw Edges was curated by Federica Sala of PS, one of the agencies spearheading the cultural initiatives in the 5VIE district, which takes its name from five streets in Milan’s historic city center.
