After designing the Laufen showroom in Madrid, Patricia Urquiola has a new collaboration with the Swiss bathroom specialists: the SONAR range.

First step: thinking of the wafer-thin SaphirKeramik material as a three-dimensional entity. The result is a series of wall-hung washbasins, washbasin bowls and a bathtub that are as slender as they are robust, as functional as they are decorative. It is, in other words, a study in contrasts from the Spanish visionary.

“To me, Laufen means many themes: innovation, choice and research on the finest materials and respect for design” she explained. These qualities allowed her to focus on detailed experiments with inclined planes, material cuts and small internal overhangs that could optimise the flow of water, to create pillbox-like objects with finely defined curves based on the strength of Laufen’s high-tech ceramic material.
