Brussels Gallery Weekend 2021

This weekend marks the fourteenth edition of Brussels Gallery Weekend. From the 9th until the 12 of September, no fewer than forty-six art galleries open their doors to surprise visitors. The event has become a regular fixture on the annual arts scene for almost fifteen years, the Brussels Gallery Weekend aims to highlight the dynamism of the arts sector, showcasing the know-how and talent of artists with reputations stretching far beyond Belgium, thereby affirming our support and engagement with the Belgian art scene. 

With the interrupted event of last year, the organization looks forward to a weekend filled with the best of things, modernizing and becoming ever stronger, thanks in particular to the brand new website and exhibitions in shop windows. The team of organizers – led by Sybille du Roy de Blicquy, director of BGW – are delighted to be welcoming public visitors back to this fourteenth edition, with a focus on art that is pleasing to the eye while of course still paying attention to the health and safety of visitors. 

Participating galleries include Xavier Hufkens, presenting “The Setup” by Huma Bhabha. Bhabha’s sculptures are informed by a myriad of cultural references and executed in an equally diverse range of materials, processes, and techniques. Also participating is Irène Laub Gallery presents “A day with you” by Guillermo Mora. In the last few years, Guillermo Mora has charted a unique path in the field of painting. Working at the crossroad of other disciplines, he raises fundamental questions from a physical and corporeal perspective. Galerie Nathalie Obadia presents the show “Jusqu’ici tout va bien” (Etudes pour le portrait de Pierre-François), which marks the fourth exhibition dedicated to the artist Jérôme Zonder, his second in Brussels since 2016.

Finally, Spazio Nobile Gallery presents different exhibitions. In the show Windows, Vercruysse explores the image as a window that opens onto the real and the imaginary. The figurative space takes new shapes in the defined frame, sometimes blurred by frosted glass or a projected shadow. Spazio Nobile Studiolo holds the show “Encres bleues” by Tomáš Libertíny. With this show, Libertíny explores the concept of landscape paintings trying to extract the essence of the experience of being overwhelmed by space and nature’s territory. Finally, in the gallery visitors can be mesmerized by the show Sacre de la Matiere presents work of, amongst others, Jörg Bräuer, Amy Hilton, and Kaspar Hamacher.
