COS x Sou Fujimoto’s Forest of Light

For its fifth annual presentation in Milan, COS has invited Sou Fujimoto to create an immersive installation, inspired by its latest collection of accessible ultraminimal clothing. Following memorable commissions by the likes of Nendo and Snarkitecture, Fujimoto’s “Forest of Light” is realized as a large mirrored room in which dozens of responsive spotlights form vertical cones of light. The play of light and shadow is captivating precisely for its deceptive simplicity: the abstracted grove of trees that represents “fashion, space, and forest as a form of architecture”.
Previously COS and Fujimoto have collaborated only indirectly via the Serpentine Gallery, for which the Japanese architect designed the perennial pop-up pavilion in 2013 and the Swedish clothing brand sponsor the Serpentine Park Night series. With the “Forest of Light”, COS brings the ephemeral architecture to the Cinema Arti in Milan’s San Babila district, a formerly derelict theatre space, designed by Mario Cereghini in the 1930s.
