Taking place on June 2 and 3 at Halles de Schaerbeek, the Brussels fashion event promises some 350 models touting the creative wares of the fashion students at La Cambre. The Brussels school of art and design was established in 1927 by Belgian artist and architect Henry van de Velde. The fashion department was established in 1986.
A five-year curriculum emphasises both pragmatic commercial skills and avant garde personal expression through its two subjects: Stylism and Fashion Design. Orientated towards responding to specific briefs in particular production, communication and distribution contexts, Stylism prepares students for the business and technical aspects of the fashion industry. Working outside the pressures of economic constraints, the Fashion Design strand encourages students to develop an innovative signature. Seminars, workshops and projects demand a holistic application of these two approaches. Further transdisciplinary workshops, courses and seminars also introduce students to history, philosophy and aesthetics, literature, semiotics, and law. Intense technical training, annual internships and the renowned annual public show ensure the professional calibre of students.
The renown of the La Cambre-Mode[s] show is perhaps best affirmed by its most distinguished jury, including representatives from Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, John Galliano, Suzy Menkes, Raf Simons, Agnès B and Véronique Branquinho.
