In the uncomfortable current situation caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Western world is facing an unavoidable rethinking of society. Especially places that are based on social contact are in a particularly difficult situation due to government regulations in the fight against the pandemic: shops, supermarkets, and restaurants. Mediamatic, which is located on the Amsterdam waterside, is inspired by these regulations and presents ‘Serres Separée’, which prompts a new design for dining together.

The name refers to the separate spaces in restaurants and bars which are traditionally called ‘chambre séparée’. The name suggests a certain intimacy and privacy. These small greenhouses provide protection against the outside world and others, whilst giving a unique experience of intimate dining. Giving space to a private get together, however visible to the outside world. Ultimately it is exploring questions of togetherness and protection.

It is possible to enjoy a vegan 4-course menu in the greenhouses at Mediamatic, which you can make reservations for on their website.
