Parley for the Oceans is a new form of environmental organization, established in 2012 by award-winning designer and brand/product developer Cyril Gutsch. Parley for the Oceans is the global network where creators, thinkers, and leaders from the creative industries, brands, governments, and environmental groups come together to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans and collaborate on projects that can end their destruction.

The organization has formed alliances with major partners including Adidas, Anheuser Busch InBev (Corona), American Express; the Republic of the Maldives, the World Bank, and collaborators spanning the worlds of science, art, fashion, design, entertainment, sports, space and ocean exploration. The organization focuses on raising awareness of major ocean threats and fund initiatives for direct impact, education, material science, and eco-innovation. For this, Parley developed, amongst many others, the following three projects.

Underwater Pavillions

Underwater Pavilions is artist Doug Aitken’s large-scale installation and collaboration with Parley consisting of three temporary sculptures submerged beneath the water’s surface. As a symbol and catalyst for the Parley Deep Space Program, the sculptures provide a portal into the marine realm that swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers can swim through and experience.

Merging the language of contemporary architecture, land art, and ocean awareness, the Underwater Pavilions are a living artwork with a vibrant ecosystem — one that invites the viewer to author a personal narrative in the exploration and protection of the oceans.

Parley for the Oceans Cleanup project

The Parley Global Cleanup Network is an alliance of organizations taking direct action against marine plastic pollution. Our cleanup collaborations remove plastic waste from beaches, remote islands, rivers, mangroves, and high seas, and intercept ocean-bound plastics in coastal communities. Together with partners, Parley responds to plastic emergencies, raise awareness, and develop and implement programs that can help end the cycle of pollution long-term.

Adidas x Parley

Over the last half-decade, a landmark partnership with Adidas has driven eco-innovation at all levels of the supply chain and created a global ocean movement through the power of sport. On Earth Day in 2015, Parley first announced our partnership with Adidas. In the five years since, the brand has lived up to their promise of taking big, bold steps towards building a better future for the oceans — not only by phasing out single-use plastics and microbeads but by launching entire product lines and new collaborations to build a better future for our oceans and planet.  Together, they have brought some of the biggest and most tangible threats facing the marine environment to a global audience, while demonstrating the role all can and must play in being a part of the solution. Through the power of sport, community, education, and activism, the oceans turned into a truly global movement that transcends borders, engaging people of all ages and backgrounds through events like Parley Ocean School, 747 Warehouse St, and Run for the Oceans.
